Canton is a historic community in Fulton County, Illinois, located in west-central Illinois. The city has a long industrial and agricultural heritage and has grown into an important hub within the surrounding county.

Canton was founded in 1825 by settler Isaac Swan, and its history is closely tied to manufacturing, agriculture, education, and healthcare.

Illinois Route 9 and Illinois Route 78 intersect in the downtown area, connecting Canton to Farmington to the north and the surrounding county to the east and west. Canton is also home to Spoon River College.

Canton's history dates back almost 200 years, built on agriculture, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship — including early plow and agricultural equipment manufacturing.

The city's industrial history includes the Parlin & Orendorff Company, which later became part of International Harvester's Canton Works. Today, Canton combines that historic character with modern healthcare, education, and local business.

Canton is the largest city in Fulton County, which covers about 883 square miles in west-central Illinois, between the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers — with the Illinois River forming part of the county's southeastern boundary.

The surrounding area includes rolling farmland, wooded areas, and waterways, with corn, soybeans, and livestock among the region's agricultural activities. Fulton County is also known locally as “Spoon River Country,” a nod to the river running through it.
